BLACK-OWNED GROCERY STORE OPENS IN INDIANAPOLIS FOOD DESERTBy Lauren Nutall - Black Enterprise Indianapolis now has a Black-owned grocery store which was unveiled Sept. 27.Located on 6160 E. 38th Street near Sheridan Avenue, Indy Fresh Market is located in the middle of a food desert, where residents previously had to shop at convenience shops for their everyday needs due to a scarce number of grocery stores, WISH-TV reports. That’s all about to change. With the opening of Indy Fresh, Marion County residents will now be able to access healthy and affordable foods without having to travel three miles to the nearest market. Owners Michael McFarland and Marckus Williams, both Arlington Woods natives, started their business venture two years ago.β€œFeeding low-access and low-income citizens is a passion of mine,” Williams told WISH-TV.For many residents, the two men are changing lives, but to them, they’re just doing what’s right.β€œAs a veteran of foreign wars, I have seen hunger and insecurity in many forms, and I will no longer be on the sidelines, especially in my neighborhood,” McFarland said. Now that their vision has reached fruition, the pair has expressed plans to expand in the near future, all part of a community revitalization initiative led by Cook Medical Group in partnership with Goodwill Commercial Services. New #ownership models as economic regenerators ... "In Kansas, the average grocery store owner is57 years old, according toJustin Carter, a senior project manager at the Center for Rural Affairs, 'and they’re having a lot of trouble finding new owners.'"Carter says the failure to secure a new generation of owners has caused many rural grocery stores to close. 'You’re getting a situation where the current group of store owners are retiring and just nobody’s taking over the store.'"To keep their stores from shuttering, some communities are applying a range of creative solutions: Community-owned stores:When Hay Springs, Nebraska (pop. 600) lost its only grocery store in 2019, local advocates beganpamphletingto convince residents to buy out the store as a collective. The Farm to Family Cooperative opened in 2021. Self-serve stores:In Evansville, Minnesota (pop. ~700), residents had todrive 40 milesto get many of their groceries. One couple opened Main Street Market, a 24-hour self-serve grocery store accessible via an annualsubscriptionof $75/year.Public-private partnerships:Often, cities might agree to cover a grocery store’s rent in order to help it cut costs. In West Baltimore, for instance, the nonprofit grocery Fresh at the Avenue operates out of acity-owned building.""Erie’s approach β€” to turn its grocery store into a publicly funded enterprise β€” is far less common. But it certainly isn’t a stand-alone case." ... https://lnkd.in/eFVmgE-G

What people don't realize about this is during the mid-2010s, the 99Β’ store made the pivot to selling fresh foods and vegetables in their stores. While not always the most economical, this served as a lifeline for numerous #fooddeserts, particularly in low-income areas. In many instances, these stores became the sole source of nutritious options for communities lacking access to traditional grocery stores.Recent closures of these stores will exacerbate the challenges faced by already underserved and vulnerable communities. The repercussions are far-reaching, touching upon issues of #foodinsecurity, #publichealth, and #socioeconomicdisparities.#socialdeterminantesofhealth

Found an interesting case study about creating a WOW experience for your customers. And how it paid off. πŸ™ŒChewy.co was the online shop with the highest net sales in the pet supplies eCom market .πŸ’ΈIn 2011, Ryan Cohen and Michael Day launched their online pet food startup. 🐢They weren't cheaper. There weren't any special pet food or toys. What set them apart was their customer service.πŸ‘‰ Every customer is welcomed with a fun, friendly handwritten card.πŸ‘‰ 100 artists were hired to paint customers' pets. These adorable portraits were then mailed to customers.πŸ‘‰ If they heard about a pet passing away, they sent a bouquet and a condolence note. A simple gesture that meant so much.5 years after launch, Chewy overtook Amazon as the biggest online pet food retailer in the US. πŸ‘In 2017, Chewy was purchased by PetSmart for $3.35 billion, which at the time was the largest-ever acquisition of an e-commerce business.#startup #marketingcasestudy #marketingtactics

I couldn't tell you how many people told us that tempeh was too niche...That it would be years and years before Better Nature Tempeh would get onto a supermarket shelf πŸ˜₯ That we should consider diversifying away from just tempeh and not put all our eggs into one basket 😬 Or that at least we should move away from our tempeh block, as so few people would use it. And I'll be honest, there were many days where we believed them... Where we felt totally demoralised and defeated by no, after no, after no πŸ˜– We questioned if we'd wasted years of our lives, with little pay and a lot of stress, into something that just wasn't going to work πŸ€·β™€οΈ But we perserved, we observed, we learnt, we adjusted, we refined...We knew that we couldn't force it, we had to see what the market wanted and respond accordingly. We had to remove our egos and assumptions and be ready to adapt. Slowly but surely, we stopped being this small niche brand that was never going to make it big...And we became a brand that's sold in four supermarkets and one that random people I meet actually know 😲(That genuinely never gets old, I accidentally squealed the other day when someone told me they had heard of us and bought our products totally separately to me!)The feeling of going to Lidl GB on Tuesday night and seeing our tempeh on the shelf again - knowing it's also in almost 1000 other Lidl stores across the country, as well as hundreds of Tesco, Asda and REWE stores - was honestly so special 🀩So if you're going through similar struggles - I see you! It's not easy. But if you know you have a product that solves a customer need and you're willing to perservere and adapt until you hit your sweet spot, you have every right to be on that shelf. Just try to believe in yourself and surround yourself with people that believe in you too (who can also be honest and give you feedback where needed) πŸ™Œ(Obviously we've got a lot more to learn and much more room to grow, but we've already achieved so much more than we were told we would and I'm incredibly grateful for that!) #Tempeh #Supermarket #Startup

Today, Fareway operates in seven states across the Midwest, including Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and South Dakota – and soon to be Wisconsin. Store sizes – modest by most definitions – vary from 8,000 to 36,000 square feet. They operate under several banners – Fareway Meat and Grocery, Fareway Meat Market and its online business, FarewayMeatMarket.com.Not an operator to follow the trends for the sake of simply following them, under his leadership Cramer has made sure that if Fareway signs off on doing something new it is because the idea is worthy of doing. And then once committed, the company puts 150 percent effort behind the idea to make it happen. It is this ability to pivot when needed and an unwavering set of principles that has helped Fareway not only succeed but thrive in today’s retail market.
